Your First RM100,000 in Three Years: What Must You Save Monthly?

Work backwards from RM100,000 using different starting balances and a zero-return baseline. Build a savings plan that does not depend on optimistic markets.

The key idea

For a short deadline, the amount you can save usually matters more than chasing a high return. Start with the zero-return row.

Define which money belongs to this goal

A goal balance should contain money you can actually use for that purpose. Exclude an emergency reserve you intend to keep untouched and assets you cannot access by the deadline. In this example RM100,000 is a fixed future amount due after 36 month-end contributions. It is not a target of RM100,000 in today’s purchasing power; that would need an inflation adjustment.

Calculate a baseline without investment growth

With RM10,000 already saved, the remaining RM90,000 divided by 36 months is RM2,500 each month. If that exceeds your available surplus, change the deadline, target or recurring expenses before changing the return assumption. A spreadsheet can make an unaffordable plan appear possible by increasing the return; it cannot make those returns arrive when a deposit or tuition bill is due.

How much does an assumed 5% change it?

The growth column assumes a smooth 5% effective annual return converted into an equivalent monthly rate, no fees and deposits at month-end. Starting from RM10,000, the required amount falls to RM2,285.49, rounded up to cents. The difference from RM2,500 is useful context, but the growth is not guaranteed. Missing contributions or experiencing a loss close to the deadline can leave a shortfall.

RM10,000.00RM2,500.00RM2,285.49

Make the monthly amount survive real life

Reserve money for annual bills before choosing an automatic transfer. Put the transfer close to payday, but leave a buffer for variable essentials. Review progress using contributions made and the remaining months, not a single strong market month. A bonus can reduce the remaining target after it arrives; it should not be counted as certain income years in advance.

What if you fall behind after a year?

Replace the original starting balance with the current usable balance and replace 36 months with the actual time left. Recalculate without pretending missed deposits will earn past returns. If the revised contribution is too high, extend the date or reduce the goal transparently. The purpose of tracking is to make a timely adjustment, not to preserve an old plan that no longer fits your income.

Put it into practice

Choose Goal mode, a fixed future target of RM100,000 and three years. Set the annual fee to zero to reproduce this table; add real costs for your own plan.
