Personal Loan: 3, 5 or 7 Years? Compare Payments and Total Interest

Compare three terms for a RM30,000 reducing-balance loan. See the monthly relief, extra interest and budget questions behind a longer repayment period.

The key idea

A smaller instalment buys breathing room, but usually means paying interest for longer. Choose a term your ordinary budget can sustain, not one that depends on bonuses.

Keep the comparison fair

Assume RM30,000 borrowed, a 6% nominal annual reducing-balance rate, monthly interest at 6% ÷ 12 and equal month-end payments. There are no fees, insurance costs or rate changes. Only the term changes. Real offers may quote different rates for different terms, so repeat the calculation using the written offer rather than carrying this hypothetical 6% into a bank application.

What does seven years buy you?

The three-year payment is about RM912.66. Seven years lowers it to RM438.26, releasing roughly RM474.40 each month but adding about RM3,957.86 in total interest. That monthly room can matter if income is uneven. It is still money owed, and using the released cash to take another loan can remove the very breathing room you created.

Read the full repayment table

Multiply the unrounded monthly payment by the number of months, then subtract principal to get the illustrative interest. The table shows the trade-off clearly. Paying the smallest amount each month is not the same as choosing the cheapest loan. Conversely, the shortest term is not automatically best if it leaves no money for rent, food, transport or an emergency reserve.

Stress-test an ordinary difficult month

Start with take-home income, subtract essentials, other repayments and monthly amounts reserved for annual bills. Then test a temporary income reduction or an unexpected expense. If the instalment only fits when overtime or a bonus arrives, reduce the amount borrowed or reconsider the purchase. A lender’s approval tests its lending criteria; it does not guarantee that your household budget will feel comfortable.

Check whether early repayment actually helps

Ask whether additional payments reduce principal immediately, shorten the term or merely prepay future instalments. Check settlement charges and rebate terms in the contract. A plan to take seven years and repay in three is only comparable with a three-year loan after those rules and costs are known. Review the outstanding balance at least annually instead of assuming every extra transfer has the intended effect.
